The Maniototo Rides and the Old Dunstan Road

Paerau (formerly known as Styx) in the Maniototo is the hub that links several gravel-raod rides through the an historic area from old Gold Rush times; an area with unique scenic values.

The Old Dunstan Road which runs from near Alexandra to Clarks Junction in particular has a fascinating history. Click here for a link to information about the Old Dunstan Trail.

You can travel through this are by combining 2 of 4 main routes:

1. Alexandra / Galloway to Paerau via the Old Dunstan Road
2. Middlemarch / Clarks Junction to Paerau via the Old Dunstan Road
3. Roxburgh to Paerau via Lake Onslow
4. Naseby / Ranfurly to Paerau

The Naseby / Ranfurly ride can be linked with the Dansey's Pass,  Hakataramea Pass and Mackenzie Pass Route  to create a wonderful gravel roads journey covering hundreds of kilometres.  This map shows how the rides connect.
