Middlemarch to Waikouaiti

We were surprised to find that you can ride from Middlemarch or Macrae's Flat more or less directly to Waikouaiti through the settlement of Nenthorn.

Most of the route is on unsealed roads, which apart from the usual problem with freshly-graded roads that don't get a lot of use (it takes a while for loose gravel to clear from the tyre tracks) the roads are good. It's an easy 65km ride through unusual country.

Google Maps doesn't recognise it as a road for vehicles, but as with the Alexandra - Paerau trip, if you tell Google you plan to walk the trip it will show you the route.  Because Google Maps won't currently allow walking routes to be saved we've created a screen shot of the route which you can see by clicking the image below.

If you want to see the route on Google Maps enter Middlemarch and Waikouaiti as the start and destination and choose the Walking option before you click Get Directions.

There are occasional picturesque old stone buildings ...

... but it's generally the ride passes through open, rolling and windswept country.

We've ridden this route 2 times, once as part of a ride from Arrowtown to Roxburgh, then via Lake Onslow to Paerau, over the Old Dunstan Road to Middlemarch, then across this route out to the coast. Now that's a great day's riding through some spectacular country.
